Activities & Excursions

The possibilities that exist for fascinating excursions are practically endless. Villa Cetinale is 15km from Siena, 80km from Florence, 128km from Pisa, and 243 km from Rome. It is ideally situated for sightseeing, shopping, eating out or just relaxing in the luxuriant Tuscan landscape. Talk to the manager, Isabella, for details. Some suggestions include:

  • The Piazza del Campo in Siena, home to the famous Palio horse race, is arguably the most beautiful town square in Italy, the Sienese Duomo being in the same league.
  • The legendary art treasures of Florence with works by Botticelli, Donatello, Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael and Michaelangelo, are just an hour away.
  • Many of the local medieval hilltop towns feature the desirable combination of alluring architecture and excellent restaurants. Good examples are Monterrigioni, Volterra, Massa Marittima, Radda in Chianti and Colle Val d’Elsa, to name but a few.
  • Many of these medieval attractive towns such as San Gimignano, Castellina, Montalcino and Montepulciano, produce high quality wine and feature winery tours and tastings.
  • Within a few kilometers of the villa, one can find little-known gems such as The Romanesque cloister at Torri (open from 9-12 on Mondays and Fridays) and the churches of San Leonardo del Lago and the Pieve di San Giovanni Battista.
  • Local trekking can be organised, along numerous trails and electric mountain bikes and road bikes can be hired locally.
  • There are two horse riding centres nearby, and pony riding on the estate can be organised.
  • Swimming is possible in the unpolluted river Merse, in the hills above Brenna, with many beautiful swimming spots.
  • It is just over one hour to the coast, with its numerous beaches as well as the Maremma, a unique area of outstanding natural beauty.
  • There are two modern waterparks nearby.
  • The working monastery at Monte Oliveto, or the abandoned one at San Galgano are both captivating and within easy reach.
  • Shopping in Florence might include the original Santa Maria Novella apothecary, as well many antique markets and contemporary shops. A trip to The Mall fashion outlet nearby features discounted goods from Prada, Gucci, Valentino, McQueen etc.
